The Showcase Interview

Q: Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?

I can’t imagine not writing, though as I have said I don’t do it all the time or every day, and have to have other things to do as well such as baking cakes, walking in the countryside, taking care of houseplants, admiring stately homes and gardens, butterflies and moths, listening to music and doing jigsaw puzzles.  I don’t know how I would find things to write about if I didn’t do all these other things.  Reading alone is not enough to inspire me, though it is so essential.  Doing the other things would also be insufficient to me if I didn’t write about doing them – it is my way of talking about the things I do.
